Niles Dog Show 2010
This year’s Niles Dog Show was held on Saturday, July 17, 2010. With some 180 entries this year — a new record for the show — there was no shortage of photo opps! There were eight judged categories, including Best Costume, Best Performer, Most Unusual Mix, Most Handsome/Prettiest and, of course, Best in Show. This year’s Best in Show winner was Lucky, pictured above, who was also the winner of the Most Handsome category for male dogs over 45 lb.
All dogs and humans were on their best behavior and had a woofing good time, in spite of the heat, which was made tolerable by the many shade awnings, cold drinks and snacks — there was even a pool just for the dogs.
In addition to the dog show, the day’s events featured a guest appearance by Officer Jason Lambert of the Fremont PD and his partner, K9 Dax, as well as a dog training demonstration and a parade of adoptable dogs. Special awards were presented to a local member of Pilots N Paws, a national rescue group, and to Janette Anderson of Fremont, CA whose patience and diligence helped reunite a lost dog, Lola, with her guardian, Andre Romero.
An emotional recognition ceremony for another Fremont resident, 22-year-old Jonathan Melbourne, was the highlight of the day. Jonathan, a Marine corporal, suffered severe injuries when his military dog, Tar, accidentally set off an IED while the two were on patrol in Afghanistan. Sadly, Tar was killed instantly by the explosion. Jonathan, now at home with his parents, faces a long road to recovery. Friends of the family have set up a Jonathan Melbourne Donation Fund on Facebook to help the Melbournes through this period of physical, emotional and economic hardship. Donations to help Jonathan and his family can be made directly at any Wells Fargo Bank branch (account #5944632909) or online at www.newmedia-designs.com/jonathan.
The Niles Dog Show, open to both mixed and pure breeds, is an annual event held each summer at the Niles Community Park, 3rd & H Streets, in Fremont, CA. To sponsor, volunteer or enter your pooch in next year’s show, visit the Niles Dog Show web page for more information.
